p-Xylene is continuously oxidised to terephthalic acid with oxygen in acetic acid at a temperature of 160 DEG to 180 DEG C in presence of a catalyst having less than 1200 ppm but not less than 800 ppm of cobalt (based on the acetic acid), manganese equal to 1% to 30% by weight of the cobalt and bromide at least 2.5 times the combined weight of the cobalt and manganese. The process yields highly pure terephthalic acid with low solvent burning. |
