Unsat polyesters from polybutadiene-unsat dicarboxylic acid adducts - for use in emulsion paints

Unsatd. polyesters made by polycondsns. of (1) a mixt. of (a) an adduct of an alpha, beta-unsat. dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and a liquid polybutadiene with Mn 150-5000, viscosity 2-9000 cP at 30 degrees C and at least 50% cis-1,4 structure, and/or the semi-ester of such adduct; (b) an aromatic polycarboxylic acid or anhydride, and opt. (c) a natural fat or oil, or a fatty acid, with (2) a polyhydric alcohol (d). The condensates with free COOH gps. corresp. to an acid value of 30-70, and contg. 5-50 wt. % component (a), may be subsequently neutralised with a base. In coating materials, esp. water-based emulsion paints, printing inks, etc. Better film-forming properties, gloss retention, hardness, impact strength and resistance to water and alkalies, than conventional alkyd resins from natural fats and oils, or their fatty acids.
