<p>A new synthetic rubber compsn. with improved green strength is prepd. by reacting a rubber copolymer of a 4-6C conjugated diolefin (I) (opt. copolymerised with an 8-10C aromatic vinyl (idene) hydrocarbon or a 3-5C vinyl nitrile) having 0.5-10 mmoles tert. amino gps. per 100g polymer, with a dihalo cpd. of formula X. CH2. CO. (R)n. COCH2Y (II) (n = 0 or 1; X and Y = Cl Br or I; R is -CR'2-or (CH2)2 (each R' is H or CH3) or an arom. gp. derived from benzene, diphenyl; diphenylether, diphenylmethane or naphthalene, all opt. substd. by >=1 1-4C alkyl; the XCH2CO and YCH2CO are at any posn. but must be on different rings except where R is phenylene). (II) form labile crosslinks so improve green strength but on heating these bonds break and the compsn. can be treated like ordinary rubber e.g. shaped into tyres. On cooling the crosslinks ar ere-formed. Compared with previously-proposed crosslinking agents such as dibromobutene-2. (II) are easier to handle because of their lower vapour press. and less unpleasant vapour.</p> |
