A composite veneer having as facing a natural stone slab several sq. ft. in area with bonded to it a backing material is produced by saw-cutting a naturally occurring piece of stone into parallel sided slabs is not >3/4 inch thick. A backing material is adhesively bonded to each face of a slab and the latter is sawn down the central plane to produce two veneer panels each having a facing >=3/16 inch thick. Preferably the stone is marble granite, slate, limestone, onyx, bluestone, gneiss, soapstone basalt or quartz, and the backing is a honeycomb with the cells oriented perpendicularly to the slab face. The panels are used for architectural and building purposes, partitions, furniture, stair treads and billiard tables. They are readily handled and do not require skilled stone masons for installation. When sufficiently thin facings they can be subjected to gentle curvature.
|
