In the preparation of iron sponge by the continuous reduction of iron oxides in a shaft furnace, the reducing gas, which is passed into this furnace in counter-current to the iron oxides, is prepared from the recycled gas and an additional gas produced from a solid reducing agent such as coal with the aid of a plasma generator. The recycled gas is essentially freed of CO2 and H20. The resulting purified gas is introduced into a plasma generator as the first partial stream. The reducing agent and water are injected together into the hot gas stream leaving the plasma generator. The water is made to react with the reducing agent to form a mixture of essentially CO and H2. The temperature of the gas formed is kept within a temperature range in which the ash particles entering the solid reducing agent form a slag. The hot mixture of CO and H2 leaving the gas generator is mixed with at least one other partial stream of the purified recycled gas in such a ratio that the temperature of the resulting final gas mixture is suitable for use in the reduction process. <IMAGE> |
