A functional fluid composition comprises (A) an ester base stock and (B) a compound of the formula wherein Ar is an aromatic nucleus, preferably benzene, benzoquinone or naphthalene; R 1 is hydroxyl, OM 1 or wherein M 1 is an alkali metal; R 2 is and when R 2 occupies a position ortho to R 1 or when Ar is naphthalene and R 1 and R 2 occupy positions 1,8-, R 1 and R 2 together with the aromatic nucleus to which they are attached can form a cyclic carbonate; c and d are each zero or 1 and the sum of c + d is zero or 1 and c is always zero when Ar is benzene; R 4 and R 5 are each a hydrocarbon radical or a heterooyolic ring, Y 1 is oxygen, sulfur or R 6 is hydrogen or a member of the group represented by R 5 and R 5 and R 6 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached can form a heterocyclic ring, b is zero or a number from 1 to 6; R 3 is a hydrocarbon oxy radical, a member of the group represented by R 2 , a member of the group represented by R 1 or a member of the group represented by R 5 , R 3 may represent different groups and when b has a value greater than 1 any two groups represented by R 3 which are attached to adjacent carbon atoms can together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached form a cyclic ring, provided that when Ar is benzene or naphthalene and R 1 and R 2 are attached to the same carbocyclic ring, R 2 is positioned ortho to R 1 when d has a value of 0 and R 2 is positioned ortho or meta to R 1 when d has a value of 1, and provided that when Ar is naphthalene wherein R 1 and R 2 are attached to different carbocyclic rings R 1 and R 2 occupy positions selected from 1,5- and 1,8-, and further provided that there is present at least one OM 1 group wherein M 1 is an alkali metal. The ester base stock may be a mono ester, diester, triester, polyester, complex ester or a mixture thereof. Additive (B) may be present in amount 0.001- 10 wt. per cent. In the examples the base stock comprised a mixture of short chain pentaerythritol esters and short chain dipentaerythritol esters and contained triaryl phosphate, phenyl α-naphthylamine and dioctylphenylamine in minor amounts; the additives (B) were the potassium salts of 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoylanilide and of o-hydroxy-acetophenone. The compositions may be used as gas turbine lubricants or as hydraulic fluids. |
