A gettering composition comprises at least a first non-evaporable getter metal chosen from the group consisting of titanium and zirconium in the form of only partially sintered particles, mixed with a particulate Zr-V-Fe alloy having a particle size greater than that of the first getter metal. The Zr-V-Fe alloy has a composition in weight percent which lies within the polygon shown in Figure 13 having the corner points designated a, b and c. Particle sizes are specified and in the final getter structure the Zr or Ti particles are in contact with one another while the particles of the ternary alloy are generally spaced out of contact with one another. The getter may be activated by heating to 300 DEG - 600 DEG C for 1-30 minutes. Getter devices using such a composition, held by a container or in general by a support which can be a conducting wire heater, are particularly useful in those applications which require low temperatures and the available space is limited. A method is also described for the manufacture of vacuum vessels and rare gas filled vessels, e.g. C.R.T.'s valves, lamps, T.W.T.'s and klystrons.

|
