PURPOSE:To improve the rigidity of a cylinder block by connecting the forward and rear ends of the cylinder row to the forward and rear walls of a cylinder block and forming the cooling water passages detouring the outside of the cylinderhead bolt holes. CONSTITUTION:The forward and rear ends of a cylinder row 4 are connected to the forward and rear walls 5 and 6 and cooling water inlet passages 11 and 12 are formed at the forward end of water jackets 8 and 9 detouring cylinderhead bolt holes 10 thereby obtaining the strength equal to a cylinder block having an upper deck and reducing the spacing between the cylinders to reduce the overall length of a block 1 to improve its rigidity and to suppress the noise due to insufficient rigidity. The rigidity is further improved by elimination of the need for opening a water hole in the forward wall 5 to reduce the vibration input to a timing cover and making possible to reduce the thickness (t) and (t') of the forward and rear walls of the block 1. |
