The machine tool chuck uses an expandable sleeve (2) of segments (21) connected by layers of rubber (3) having a tapered bore. The sleeve is mounted on a tapered nose (15) relative to which it is displaced axially to effect its expansion and the gripping of a workpiece (P) bore. The nose (15) projects axially from a larger cylindrical base (11) which houses into an adaptor plate (10) fixed (11) to the machine, and two radial steps effect the reduction in diameter. Rotary drive is transmitted to the sleeve by segmental base (11 to 13) upstands (14) engaging rebates in sleeve segments (21 to 25). The number of segments (21 to 25) exceeds the number of upstands (14) by one and one segment is not rebated, the assembly taking up axial (j1,j2,j3) and circumferential tolerances (a) to expand.
