The multi-disc automobile clutch incorporates smooth discs interposed by lined discs, the return sprung disc being thrust onto a support by a piston. The plane faces of the lined discs have approx. radial grooves which open out onto the internal boundary of the face only, and the angles between the groove sides and the major disc face have gently sloping faces. The grooves may be straight, angled or curved. The grooves may be 'V' shaped or part circular in cross-section or may have a rectangular section with rounded angles.
