Sulphided sorbents prepn. by polymerising vinyl! monomers - with di:vinyl sulphide, used by ion exchange resin for selective adsorption of e.g. biological substances and metals

Sulphur-contg. sorbants are prepd. by copolymerising vinyl monomers with divinyl sulphide (I) by introducing (I) into the reaction mixt. in an amt. of 0.014-1.4 mole per mole, or per molar fraction, of vinyl monomer. The latter is pref. acrylonitrile, vinylpyridine, Me acrylate, styrene, N,N'-p,p'-diphenyl methane-bis-maleimide or a mixt. of 1 mole vinylpyridine (VPD) and 0.02-0.15 mole divinylpyridine (DVPD). (I) imparts elasticity, osmotic stability, and high mechanical strength to the polymer matrix. The polymers are used as sorbants having reactant permeability, good ion exchange speed and complex formation rate. Applications include selective extn. and purification of biological substances (e.g. alpha-amylase, antibiotics, and amino acids) and selective extn. of metals such as Cu, Ni, Co, W etc. from residual waters. Copolymers of VPD and (I) are used for extracting halide ions from aq. solns.
