The engine has a cylinder (1) with cooling fins (2) on its outside. A tight fitting sleeve (5) is placed over the fins and sealed to the upper and lower fins (2a,2b). The intermediate fins are cut back (7) so that a single chamber (6) is formed round the cylinder enclosed by the upper and lower fins and the sleeve. Connections (9,11) are made into this chamber for entry and discharge of cooling water which circulates through the chamber (6). The inlet connection (9) is taken from a pipe dipping into the water near the boat's propeller so that the motion of the boat through the water provides cooling water flow.
