<p>The reactor has an electrode comprising several, parallel, metal grills. The spacing distance between adjacent grills is 0.1-30 mm, pref. 0.5-5 mm. When immersed in the electrolyte, the grill spacing distance is sufficient to ensure that each grill is electronically insulated from its neighbour(s). The intensity of electric current supplied to each grill is pref. independently controllable, partic. by means of a variable resistance. The reactor can be adapted for a variety of electrolytic applications, e.g. (a) to alter the degree of oxidn. of an element in soln., e.g. oxidn. of Ce (III) to Ce (IV) for the prepn. of naphthoquinone, prepn. of anthroquinone from anthracene and prepn. of benzoic acid from toluene; (b) electroplating; (c) anodic oxidn. of effluents polluted with organic materials; (d) organic electrosynthesis. The multi-grill electrode offers a high capacity output with a compact installation. Dilute solns. can be electrolysed at high current densities, e.g. 2000 amps per sq.m. even when electrolyte flow rate is low.</p> |
