<p>A melting chamber is kept at a vacuum and contains a consumable electrode with an automatically controlled feed gear. A water-cooled partition with a central funnel separates it from the chill mould. To prevent the arc from striking the partition directly and destroying it, an annular recess is arranged around the funnel so that an adequate layer of liquid metal is always retained. Esp. used for remelting highly reactive metals e.g. Ti,Mo,Ta, and steel alloys.</p> |
