The apparatus, for example a contact sensor (10), has a housing (19) which is formed by a housing lower part (21) and the cover (23). The clamping means (31) of the attachment device (13) for attaching the apparatus (10) to a pipeline (15) are arranged in the interior of the housing (19). The strip (11) having the clamping means (31) can initially be placed around the pipeline (15), the clamping means (31) then being pushed into a recess (29) which has slots (51) for the strip (11). Tightening the screw (43) reduces the size of the strip loop (45) and attaches the housing lower part (21) securely to the pipeline (15). After the remaining end (38) of the strip (11) has been cut off, the cover (23) is attached to the lower part (21) by means of a snap-action device (25). This cover (23) also avoids the risk of people injuring themselves on ends of the strip projecting from the clamping means (31). Since the apparatus (10) and the clamping means (31) are located on the same side of the pipeline (15), installation is considerably simplified. <IMAGE>
