A heater is employed to heat a narrow zone of a fibre to its m.pt.; and the fibre is then drawn by a tensile stress applied to at least one of its ends. During the drawing operation, the heater is moved along the fibre; and the speed of travel of the heater, and the drawing speed, are controlled so the desired taper is obtd. The heater pref. travels at a slower speed than the drawing speed, and in the opposite direction to the drawing direction. This sequence of operations is pref. repeated, and the heater moved along the entire tapered zone. Used in optical data transmission, e.g. when a fibre is to be coupled to a laser diode. The end of the fibre must be reduced in dia. to suit the diode. The invention permits the easy prodn. of conical or stepped tapers.
|
