Neutralising field disturbances in electrostatic flocking machine - using oppositely-charged electrode held close to fabric surface

Field disturbances in an electrostatic flocking machine due, e.g. to charged foreign particles or to dipole formation on overlong fibres are neutralised by a control electrode which so alters the direction of the disturbing field that the surrounding area of the fabric surface is freed from the influence of the field. The control electrode comprises a series of parallel wires across the width of the fabric, at a height above its surface which is small compared to the height of the main electrode. The potential of the electrode can be varied, either manually or automatically, and may be unidirectional or alternating. This is a simple method of immediately neutralising any field disturbance and avoiding imperfections in the flocked surface, preventing the prodn. of reject material.
