Title compds.(I; R = hydroxyl, C1-10 alkoxy, C1-6 alkylthio, C2-4 alkenyloxy, halogen, benzylthio or phenylthio etc.), useful as herbicides, were prepd. by the reaction of 4-(2'-chloro-4'-bromo)-phenoxy-phenol and α-halopropionic acid lower alkylester in the presence of acid binding agent. Thus, 74 g anhydrous K2CO3 and 160 g 2-chloro-4-bromo-4'-hydroxy-diphenyl ether were mixed in 500 ml acetone, and added 89.5 g methyl-α-bromopropionate, and stirred at 60-63≦̸C for 12 hr to give 168 g I.
