The bicycle drive shaft has a pedal arm (10) on the end of which is a cylindrical member (24). A connector arm (30) connects the axle (46) on the end of the pedal (14) to an axle (26) in the centre of the cylinder (24). A wheel fitted to the other end of the pedal (14) runs round the inside wall of the cylinder (24) so that the pedal is held constantly in a position at right angles to the downward pressure on the pedal. This ensures that less drive power is lost during the power stroke than on conventional pedals. In other variations the wheel on the pedal and the cylinder wall can be provided with gear teeth to improve contact.
