PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high selectivity under mild conditions, by reacting an aldehyde with an alcohol in diluted O2 gas of specific concentration in the presence of a catalyst containing Pt, Pd or a compound thereof. CONSTITUTION:An aldehyde, e.g. an aliphatic saturated aldehyde, aliphatic unsaturated aldehyde or aromatic aldehyde, is reacted with an alcohol, e.g. an aliphatic saturated alcohol, diol, aliphatic unsaturated alcohol or aromatic alcohol, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of one type selected from Pt and/or Pd, preferably Pt, Pd and a compound thereof and one or more types selected from Te, Pb, Hg, Tl and compounds thereof supported on a carrier, e.g. Al2O3 or CaCO3, in an inert gas containing molecular oxygen in a concentration of 18-1mol%, preferably a gas containing O2 or air diluted with 10-3mol% inert gas, at 20-80 deg.C under atmospheric pressure to give the aimed carboxylic ester. |
