A tripping mechanism for an electrical snap-action switch consists of a moving contact element which is supported such that it can pivot, a tripping lever which is supported such that it can pivot, and a leaf spring which is clamped in between the lever and the moving contact element. The mechanism trips in two stages, the lever carrying out a limited pivoting movement in the first stage, while the moving contact element still remains in the quiescent position until the lever pivots in a limited manner with a snapping movement, as a result of which the moving contact element is allowed to switch over with a snapping movement during the second stage. The two-stage tripping prevents chattering or bouncing of the moving contact element before switching.
