Method for controlling the fuel-air ratio in which a correction of the set value of the fuel-air ratio is performed on the basis of an analysis of whether the fuel-air ratio has a value lying on the richer or leaner side of the optimum fuel-air ratio, the analysis being performed in that signals, which indicate the operating state are compared with one another in respect of at least three points for different fuel-air ratios and the correction is directed towards bringing the basic fuel-air ratio closer to the fuel-air ratio for an optimum output power.
