The gripping device to hold rods, bars or tubes, particularly thin walled tube during cutting or grinding operations etc., has two jaws (3) moved together and apart by blocks (1,2), to which they are fitted. Each jaw is formed by a shell with a sloping internal surface, the two internal surfaces forming a funnel-shaped gripping opening when moved together. Each internal surface is formed by a half-circle of longitudinal segments (4) mounted in an adjustable manner. The two jaws can be slid longitudinally to increase or decrease the size of the opening between them. The two outer blocks have end surfaces to act as stops for the sliding jaws.
