The apparatus comprises an upstanding column 1, a fan-like turbine (7 Fig. 2, not shown) which is rotatably mounted on the column and which comprises circumferentially spaced, radially extending blades (8) and secured to the outer edge of the fan, a turbine 9 which comprises circumferentially spaced blades 10 extending lengthwise with respect to the column. An annular body 14 is supported by the column 1 and has circumferentially spaced blades 16 depending therefrom to define, between adjacent blades, venturi through which wind is directed on to the turbine blades 10. Immediately below the turbine (7) the column has circumferentially spaced, helically extending fins 4 defining passages 5 to cause wind to flow upwardly within the passages to drive the turbine (7).
