An extruder has a die head frame (20) in which is mounted a die block assembly (32) defining a flow passage (44) from the outlet of the extruder barrel (10) to the die opening. The block assembly (32) is clamped in place by means including converging opposed surfaces (30) of the frame (32) co-operating with similarly converging surfaces (46) on opposite sides of the block assembly (32) which act to clamp the blocks of the assembly (32) together as the assembly is urged into the frame by levers (56) powered by hydraulic cylinders (64). A joint ring (90) is provided between the barrel (10) and the block assembly (32). A lever system is used for removing the block assembly (32), the levers being pivotally interconnected for pivoting movement, from a pedestal about axes perpendicular to the mateing plane of the parts of the assembly (32). The system permits ready removal of the assembly for replacement or for cleaning by disassembling the assembly giving access to the flow passage and permits change of die lips (72, 74) without disassembling the head. <IMAGE>
