A space is provided in a slide fastener chain(F) having a coil plastic filament stitched to a tape by supporting the chain on the tape side and adjacent the fastener element legs, lowering a punch with a cutter blade so that the chain becomes inclined with the element heads exposed, cutting off the heads(H), and removing the legs. The chain is supported by a die with a recess of smaller width than the total width of the interlocked filaments and into which the heads move when contacted by the punch. A guide above the die holds the elements(E) together and a scraper picks off the legs.
