The electrochemical cell comprises a Li anode, an electrolyte and a cathode within a container. The container has a glass-to-metal seal, the glass of the seal being subjected to degradation in a Li environment. The surface of the glass exposed to the interior of the container is adherently coated with a material comprising metal oxides having a free energy of formation >100 Kcal/gm-atom of oxygen at 300ok, polyolefins and adhering polymeric fluorocarbons. Pref. the glass is selected from silicates. Pref. metal oxide is Al, Ca, Nb, Mn, or Ba oxide. The coating on the glass is stable in the presence of Li and other cell components, and prevents deterioration of the glass-to-metal seal.
