In a circular machine having at least one pattern wheel or drum the peripheral speed of the wheel equals the average resultant speed of the needle jacks during the period in which they are moved radially of the cylinder by the wheel bits. The arrangement minimizes relative movement between bits and jacks. In a conventional wheel the jack butt pitch equals the wheel bit pitch therefore the number of butts on the arc Y of their maximum excursion in the vicinity of the wheel 11 is not equal to the number of bits in the arc X. Thus relative movement occurs between butts and bits. To avoid this relative movement it is arranged that the numbers of butts on arc Y and the bits on arc X are equal. This entails increasing the bit pitch, i.e. making the wheel bigger than would otherwise be the case, with a consequent increase in peripheral speed. |
