PURPOSE:To obtain an organic carbonate easily in high yield useful as a various kinds of solvents, by using a metal halide selected from the group consisting of specific Bi, Ge, Te halide compound as a catalyst in the reaction between an epoxide and carbon dioxide gas. CONSTITUTION:By using 0.1-100mol% metal compound selected from the group consisting of a Bi, Ge, and Te compounds shown by the formulas I, II, and III (R is alkyl, phenyl, etc.; X is Cl, Br, or I; g and h are 1-4; g+h=5, k-n are 1-3; k+l=4; m+n=4) as a catalyst, an epoxide (e.g., ethylene oxide, etc.) and 1-3 times molar amount of carbon dioxide gas based on epoxide are heated preferably at 50-120kg/cm<2> at 100-160 deg.C, and stirred to give the desired organic carbonate. Or, the metal compound as a main catalyst is used with a catalyst consisting of an organic basic cocatalyst (e.g., aliphatic amine, etc.), and the reaction is carried out similarly, to give the desired substance. |
