A spanning structure, for example for roofs or bridges or as a support form for poured concrete bridges, comprises at least two layers 11a, 11b each of longitudinally extending upwardly open channel shaped beam members 12 in contacting side-by-side arrangement, the upper edges of the channel side walls 17 in a lower layer being connected to the underside of the channel base 16 of the beam member 12 disposed immediately thereover. The beam members 12 may be formed of sheet metal. The upper edges of the channel side walls 17 may have flanges 18 against which the channel bases 16 are secured either by screws, blind rivets, welding or by adhesive, such as adhesive tape 20. A further layer of sheet material may be applied over the upper layer of members 12. The closed voids formed within the channels may be filled with rigid light-weight material 21 such as foamed plastic or foamed concrete which may be adhered to the inner surface of the voids. Adjacent channels in each layer may be pivotely interconnected by use of separate members or integral interlocking formations on the side walls. The structures may be upwardly bowed. |
