Chlorine dioxide is prepd. by redn. of chlorate ions with chloride ions in an aq. reaction medium contg. above 6N sulphuric acid, with the reaction medium being held at its boiling pt. under a sub-atmospheric pressure with pptn. of an acid sulphate. Specifically, after the pptd. acid sulphate has been removed from the reaction zone, it is contacted with water in the presence of an alcohol or a water soluble ketone to form a solid neutral sulphate and an aq. phase contg. sulphuric acid which is recycled. By treating the acid sulphate prod. the render it handleable the process becomes viable unlike in prior art, and the sulphuric acid extracted from the acid sulphate is valuable when recycled. High yields of chlorine dioxide, approaching 100% theoretical are obtd.
|
