Imide formation in polymers comprises reacting the starting polymer (I) with NH3 or a prim. amine in an extruder under anhydrous conditions and at 200-450 degrees C, pref. 300-375 degrees C whilst applying pressure at the orifice(s) of the extruder. (I) is pref. a polymer of acrylic acid ester(s) and/or methacrylic acid ester(s). NH3 or amine is pref. introduced at 1-1000 atmospheres. The average dwell time can be 0.1-1000 secs., the degree of imide formation being determined by this time. In a pref. process anhydrous NH3 is introduced at 1-500 atmospheres and the average dwell time is 30-300 secs. A partial pressure of 0.9-0.01 atmospheres is applied to one or more of the extruder orifices. The temp. is 325-375 degrees C and the reaction is carried out without a solvent.
|
