1,261,298. Differential gearing; driving multiple axles. DANA CORP. 15 Sept., 1970 [15 Sept., 1969], No. 44095/70. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] To provide a torque flow greater to the rear axle than to the front axle of a four-wheel drive motor vehicle in which a limited slip bevel differential inter-axle 34 is connected to the rear and front axles (not shown) of the vehicle through respective propeller shafts 54, 56, a multi-disc friction clutch 96, 98 is interposed between the differential casing 42 and a flanged sleeve 97 which is splined to the rear axle propeller shaft and drivingly connected via facial teeth 92, 94 to a bevel side gear 84 whereby in operation equal torques T 1 and T 2 flow to the front and rear propeller shafts 56, 54, in the normal manner by the equal diameter side gears 82, 84 and a further torque flow T 3 is provided at the rear propeller shaft via the friction clutch 96, 98 engaged by the axial thrust generated between the facial teeth 92, 94 of the side gear 84 and flanged sleeve 97, the arrangement thus unequally dividing the input torque within the differential 34 and utilizing the greater torque flow to the rear axle normally having the greater loading thereon. The differential casing 42 is driven via a chain 30 from an output shaft 14 of a shift box (not shown) providing two speeds for the axles of the vehicle. |
