An alarm system includes a computer 20 arranged to analyse various alarm conditions of apparatus (e.g. a nuclear power plant) to determine which alarms result from the prime causes of a number of alarms which may be present. The prime cause alarms are displayed on a visual display unit 32 and the presence of subsidiary alarms is indicated by group alarm lamp on a group alarm panel 34.
