Prepn. is carried out by (a) introducing a mixture of acetaldehyde and an inert organic solvent together with a molecular oxygen contg. gas into the lowest small reaction space of a perpendicular cylindrical reactor, in which at least one vertical cooling tube is situated, and in which the reaction space between the inner wall of the reactor and the outer wall of the cooling tube is divided into at least three small reaction spaces by means of horizontal separating plates, each provided with a number of perforations with an equivalent diameter =8 mm, the equivalent diameter being the quotient of four times the surface of the perforation and the length of the periphery of the perforation, while the height of each small reaction space is 0.3 to 5 times the square root of the surface of its horizontal cross section, (b) passing the liquid and the gas together in an upwards direction through the reactor, through the perforations in each separating plate to the next small reaction space, while gas bubbles are formed and uniformly dispersed in the liquid by maintaining an average gas flow velocity between 0.4 and 6.0 m/sec. at the perforations, and 0.04 - 0.15 m/sec., calculated as the surface velocity of the column, (c) discharging reaction heat by leading a coolant through the cooling ubes, and (d) discharging a reaction product contg. peracetic acid, the unreacted oxygen-contg. gas from the uppermost small reaction space. The process allows peracetic acid to be prepd. in high yields on a very large scale. |
