A tufting machine pattern comprises a number of unit areas each corresponding to a single needle stroke each unit area being divided into three parts and each part having a binary coding system which may be in the form of perforations or transparent and opaque material thus providing eight alternative patterning signals per needle stroke which may be used to control the colours of the pattern. In operation the signals are fed to an integrating circuit which activates the thus selected needle the pattern having been 'read' by photocells and a light source. |
