In an apparatus for winding flexible material into a roll P and of the kind in which a drive roller 16 engages the roll P to drive it at a constant peripheral speed, the mounting for the roll P comprises a first member 36 mounted for pivotal movement about a fixed horizontal axis A, a second member 28 mounted for pivotal movement about an axis B parallel to the axis A, the axis B being shiftable along a vertical plane passing substantially through the axis A, and the first member 36 being pivotably coupled to the second member 28 at an axis C parallel to the axes A and B, and means 24 rotatably mounting a take-up roll 14 on the second member 28 with the take-up roll axis D parallel to the axes A, B and C, the axes B, C and D defining a plane and the distances AC, BC and DC being equal to each other. The resulting motion of the axis D is along a horizontal plane and increasing package roll mass does not affect the pinch-pressure between the roll 16 and package roll P. A spring 72 is used to create a pinch-pressure between the roll 16 and the package P. Further pinch-pressure may be exerted by a piston-andcylinder assembly 62, the effective thrust of which may be predetermined by a time controlled pressure controller (66), Fig. 1 (not shown). The mass of the first and second members 36, 28 may be counterbalanced by means 52. A handle 4 can be operated to swing the means 24 to a setting shown in broken lines to permit doffing of the completed roll. A yam traversing mechanism 13 is included. |
