Novel bacteriostatic indole 4.7 quinones of the formula wherein R 1 and R 3 are methyl or ethyl, and R 2 is hydrogen, methyl, or ethyl, are prepared by nitrating an indole of the formula wherein R 4 is methyl or ethyl, reducing the 2- carboalkoxy group in the resulting 4-nitro-indole to form the corresponding 2-hydroxymethyl-4;- nitro-indole, hydrogenating this compound and oxidizing the resulting 2-hydroxymethyl-4-aminoindole with an alkali metal nitroso disulphonate. |
