The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1120793/C2/1> wherein (I) R is a nitro group, R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group or an esterified carboxylic group, and R11 is a hydrogen atom, (II) R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group, R1 is an esterified carboxylic group or an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group substituted by a non-hydrocarbon group and R11 is a hydrogen atom, or (III) R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group, R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group or an esterified carboxylic group, and R11 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, styryl or spiro-cycloalkyl group, and their preparation by (a) reaction of 2,2-dinitropropane-1,3 diol with a hexahydro-S-triazine, (b) reaction of a primary nitroparaffin or 2-nitro propane-1,3 diol derivative with paraformaldehyde and a substituted amine, optionally replacing any hydroxy group by a halogen atom, (c) reacting a 2 - nitro - 2 - R - 3 - substituted - aminopropan-1-ol with an aldehyde or a cycloalkanone, or (d) introducing an esterified carboxylic group R1 by reaction with a chloroformate ester. The compounds of the invention have anti-carcinogenic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier. |
