[Also in Division D1] Pigment dispersions and printing pastes for use in treating fibrous materials comprise an organic and/or inorganic pigment and a binding agent which is an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer of at least one acrylic and/or methacrylic acid derivative containing a terminal halomethylcarbonyl grouping and at least one other olefinically unsaturated monomer which may contain an alcoholic hydroxyl group. Said (meth)acrylic derivative is preferably one having the formula where R is H or methyl, A is or and X is Cl or Br. (The preparation of copolymers of these preferred compounds is described in Specification 1,170,514. In the examples these preferred compounds are copolymerized with monomers selected from nbutyl acrylate, styrene, #-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, acrylamide, ethyl acrylate, methacrylamide-methylol methyl ether, vinyl toluene, methacrylamide, 2-ethyl-hexyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid and butadiene. The inorganic pigment may be zinc sulphide, titanium dioxide, cadmium sulphide, iron oxide, antimony oxide or carbon black; various organic pigment or lake dyestuffs are also specified. The compositions may also include other additives, e.g. urea and thickeners such as cellulose derivatives, alginates, tragacanth, polyacrylamide and ammonium polyacrylate. The copolymer component can be crosslinked in an alkaline medium at 80-160‹ C. In the first example, a copolymer is prepared by the emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising n-butyl acrylate, styrene, #-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, acrylamide and the compound of the formula using a potassium persulphate-sodium pyrosulphite catalyst. |
