A paper machine cylindrical dryer drum(10) has a steam feed(15) to the interior & an internal support(24,25) carrying radial bristles(23) making close contact with the inner drum surface(18) and uniformly distributed along the axial length. The bristles are sufficiently stiff to generate turbulence in the condensate, to reduce condensate layer rotational speed & to collapse the layer of rimming condensate so that heat transfer from steam to drum shell(9) is markedly increased. The bristles are located so that condensate drips under gravity from them onto the condensate layer rimming the shell to generate additional turbulence.
