For this process, use is made of a mandrel which is also designed as a drill. By means of a pilot (21) which is arranged on its tip and is designed as a twist drill, a guide hole is drilled through the sheets (38, 39) to be connected. This hole is then widened to the diameter necessary for the passage of the hollow rivet body (35) by cutting edges on a section (16) projecting eccentrically with respect to the axis of the mandrel. During withdrawal, a section (11) provided on the mandrel and having the same diameter as the section (16) bearing the cutting edges not only upsets the hollow rivet but expands it on its inside to an extent which allows both sections (11, 16) to be withdrawn through the now set hollow rivet. <IMAGE>
