The alloy consists of 1.0-2.8 wt.% Sb, 0.1-0.4% Sn, 0.005-0.3% Se, 0.004-0.12% Ag, balance Pb and unavoidable impurities. The alloy may contain 0.008-0.012% Ag and 0.1-0.2% As. The alloy may contain up to 0.08% Cu. A battery grid for supporting electrochemically active material in a Pb-acid battery is formed of the alloy, pref. by directly casting from the molten alloy. A pair of directly cast battery grids for supporting active material, which are directly joined by parting areas, are formed of the alloy contg. enough As to allow the grid pair to be readily sepd. at parting areas. A lead acid battery contains positive and negative grids, at least one being of the present alloy. The alloy is stable in the molten state, has low drossing levels and is easily cast at commercially acceptable rates. Grids have superior ductility with gassing and water loss reduced in comparison with other alloys of this general type, e.g. by 20-30% compared with alloys having excessive As contents. As inclusion avoids problems with parting grid pairs or bowing.
|
