PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous recognition of character mark patterns caused by the property of the same rank for black and white, by utilizing-the polarity of resultant resemblance degree of face in the coarse of the midway of recognition processing. CONSTITUTION:An input pattern 1 supplied quantized picture signals to a face resemblance degree circuit 2. The face resemblance degree circuit 2 obtains face resemblance degree between load patterns of mXn times of a standard pattern group 3 and inputs patterns for mXn pieces, and judgements of each face resemblance degree are performed at a face resemblance degree judging circuit 4. On the other hand, a composite resemblance degree circuit 5 obtains composite resemblance degrees based on mXn pieces of face resemblance degrees and by using m pieces of face resemblance degrees as one unit corresponding to each standard pattern, and the maximum resembling degree and the next largest resemblance degree value are extracted at a composite resemblance degree judging circuit 6. The maximum resemblance degree obtained at the composite resemblance degree circuit 6 is larger than the threshold and the difference with the next largest resemblance degree is sufficiently large, and moreover, recognitions are performed by referring the polarity of face resemblance degree corresponding to the polarity of patterns to be recognized. |
