A gamma -Fe2O3 magnetic powder with adsorbed cobalt and with a content of iron(II) ions is prepared. This involves admixing, an aqueous suspension of gamma -Fe2O3 powder with a cobalt salt and a base, followed by the addition of an iron(II) salt. The reaction to form cobalt hydroxide from the cobalt salt and the base is carried out while the reaction mixture is heated.
