Steam detector, esp. for a nuclear power plant, comprises two electrodes (6,4) separated by an insulator (8) of porous material to constitute a type of capacitor; the two electrodes are mechanically connected together. The two electrodes are electrically connected with a resistance and/or capacitance measuring device. Used partic. as a steam detector in a nuclear power plant. In a main steam duct, a small crack passing enough steam to actuate the detector will normally commence up to one hour before a burst duct may occur. Thus the steam detector allows ample time for the incipient burst to be detected and the necessary measures to be taken.
