1,272,313. Heat exchangers. WAAGNER BIRO A.G. 26 June, 1969 [26 June, 1968], No. 32476/69. Heading F4A. A heat exchanger comprises main and supplementary pressure barriers 1, 2 respectively against the escape of a first fluid under pressure, a plurality of connecting pipes 4 for a second fluid, extending at least between the barriers 1, 2, and a plurality of tubes 6, 7, 8 connected to tube sheets 3 within the pipes 4 the tube sheets 3 forming part of the main barrier 1 The supplementary barrier 2, which provides a temporary seal if the main barrier fails, is formed partly by plugs 5 which form slidable joints between the tube sheets 3 and their respective pipes 4 to allow for expansion and contraction. The central pipe 4 has a tube sheet 3 and a plate 18 which form respective parts of the main and supplementary pressure barriers. The heat exchanger has a pressure vessel 20 through which hot gases flow from a reactor (not shown), via a conduit 9. Feedwater is supplied through an inlet 11 to feed the tubes 6, 7. The tubes 8 which form a separate reheater are fed through a separate pipe 4 and the steam leaves via an outlet 12. A cylinder 16 is joined by a pin and slot connection 17 to the main barrier 1 to permit expansion and contraction. Any of the tubes 7, 8 that become damaged can be isolated by inserting plugging machines into the pipes 4, after removal of closure plates 13, 14.
