The siloxanes(I; X = C<6 and C<=18 trihydrocarbylstannyl; m = 1-10; Sn-Si ratio >= 1:50 are antifouling agents for marine coatings with low odor and toxicity to mammals. Thus, stirring 298.1g Et polysilicate(Et silicate 40) and 181.3g Bu3SnOAc at 160≦̸C with distn. of 90% theor. EtOAc gives a yellow liq. stirred with 173.4g Me2CHOH gives a binder with good hardness and slight cracking, which gels after 2 mo. A mixt. of 35 parts this binder and 35 parts filler is coated on Zn compd.-primed sheets and exposed in Florida seawater, resulting in antifouling rating after 2, 4, 6, and 12 mo 10, 10, 10, and 0, resp., compared with 1, 0-1, 1, and ), resp., for a silimar coating contg. no Sn.
