A coated tool steel comprises a tool steel substrate and >=1 layer of a film consisting of a B-1 type solid soln. selected from carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of >=1 of Ti, Zr or Hf, the breadth of the peak, at half maximum intensity, of the Cμ-Kα ray diffraction from the (200) plane of the film being >=0.4o on a 20 scale. The solid soln. pref. contains O and/or B. The coated steel is used for making machine tools (such as throw-away inserts, reamers, taps, gear cutters broaches, drills, end mills and milling cutters).
