Process for preparing porous, spherical cellulose particles.

Porous, spherical cellulose particles are prepared by suspending in an aqueous medium a solution of a cellulose organic ester in a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent to form droplets of the solution, evaporating chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent in the droplets to form cellulose organic ester spherical particles, and saponifying the cellulose organic ester spherical particles. In the present process, an acid or alkali is mixed with the cellulose organic ester solution prior to suspending the solution in the aqueous medium. This mixing serves to control the porosity of the porous, spherical cellulose particles with high reproducibility.
